ZhuYin and PinYin Phonetics

1. Contestants will listen to questions read by a teacher and write down their answers. Contestants are not allowed to raise their hands or ask questions. 

2. Bring your own pencils and erasers. 

3. Parents are not allowed in the contest classroom. 

4. One point per word. There are two-word, three-word, four-word phrases, sentences and short paragraphs. 

5. Zhu-Yin Phonetics: Group B, Group C – 150 words; Group D – 100 words. Pin-Yin Phonetics: Group A, Group B – 150 words, Group CD – 100 words. 

6. Each question will be played from the recording three times. 

• Phrases will be read: 1st time – the whole phrase at normal speed, 2nd time – word by word slowly, 3rd time – the whole phrase slowly 

• Sentences: Each sentence will be read slowly 3 times.

• Short paragraphs: Each paragraph will be read slowly 3 times. Pauses will be made appropriately at punctuations. 

7. Each correct response is awarded 1 point (correct consonants, vowels and tones with correct placement of the tone marker as shown in the model answer provided by the organizing committee). 

8. Zhuyin Phonetics: 

• Contestants must use the correct symbols in Zhu-Yin. For example, the following symbols should not include an ending hook:‘ㄞ’,’ㄢ’,’ㄘ’,’ㄤ’,’ㄝ’. Each of the following symbols should include the ending hook: ‘ㄅ’,’ㄉ’,’ㄌ’,’ㄎ’,’ㄋ’. The same error will warrant a 0.5 point deduction for one time only. 

• The correct tone marker position should be at the upper right hand corner of the last symbol. 0.5 point will be deducted if the tone marker position is incorrect. The same error will warrant a 0.5 point deduction only once. Each word is worth 1 point and point deduction of each word should not exceed 1 point. 

9. Pinyin Phonetics: 

• Contestants are expected to know all the rules and special cases of Pinyin. For example, the vowel 'ㄦ' is normally written as ' er ', but when it is used as a tail vowel or terminal nasal consonant in a compound vowel, e.g. ' i ' in 'ai' and 'ei', ' o ' in 'ao', ' u ' in 'ou', ' n ' in 'an' and 'en', and ' ng ' in 'ang' and 'eng' , it should be written as ' r '. 

• 0.5 point is deducted per word if the tone marker position is incorrect. The same error will warrant a 0.5 point deduction only once. Each word is worth 1 point and point deduction of each word should not exceed 1 point. 

Academic Contest Judging Criteria and Rules 學術比賽競賽規則

1. 採取由老師讀題，學生聽音作答的方式，比賽中不可舉手發問。 

2. 請自備鉛筆、橡皮擦。 

3. 家長一律禁止進入考場。 

4. 每字一分，包括二字詞、三字詞、四字詞、句子和短文。 

5. 注音符號的B 組、C 組各有150個字；D 組有100個字。漢語拼音A 組、B 組各有150個字，CD 組有100個字。 

6. 唸題方式如下：每題唸三次 

• 辭語：先以平常說話速度唸一次，第二次則一字一字慢唸一次，第三次再整個辭語慢唸一次。 

• 句子：一句一句慢唸三次。 

• 短文：以標點符號停頓，一句一句慢唸，將全篇慢唸一次後，再慢唸第二次，全篇共慢唸三次。 

7. 每個字需連聲調完全拼對才算得分，也就是聲母、韻母、聲調、和答案位置(與題號相符)全都正確才算答對。 

8. 注音符號拼音： 

• 學生需用正確注音符號答題，筆劃書寫正確，如「ㄞ」「ㄢ」「ㄘ」「ㄤ」「ㄝ」末筆不可有鉤；「ㄅ」「ㄉ」「ㄌ」「ㄎ」「ㄋ」末筆帶鉤。如書寫有錯，則扣 0.5 分，但以上錯誤若重複出現，在整份試卷中只扣分一次。 

• 聲調符號應標在正確處，即最後一符號之右上角，位置錯誤，則扣該字一半分數，但同樣錯誤只扣分一次，每字之扣分不能超過該字之配分額 (每字最多只扣一分)。 

9. 漢語拼音： 

• 參賽者需熟知漢語拼音的通則和特例，例如韻母「ㄦ」寫成「er」，但如用做韻尾或複合元音的末端鼻音韻母時則寫成「 r」。

• 聲調符號應標在正確處，位置錯誤則扣該字一半分數，但同樣錯誤只扣分一次，每字之扣分不能超過該字之配分額。
